Course Introduction
If you don’t live in California, or if you want your CCW permit recognized by an agency in a county you plan to visit rather than the county where you reside, Focal Point Academy’s Non-Resident 16-Hour California CCW Initial Course lets you complete your required classroom training online, at your own pace, before finishing with an in-person live-fire qualification.
This 16-hour online course is delivered through our training partner, California Online CCW, and covers the same California-mandated topics as our standard initial CCW course. Once you complete the online lessons and pass the final exam, you’ll complete your live-fire qualification and then apply for your CCW permit with an agency in the county you intend to visit.

Why Choose Our Non-Resident CCW Course
Some CCW applicants don’t live in the county, or even the state, where they want their permit recognized. This course is built for that situation: it satisfies the training requirement for an application filed with an agency in a California county you intend to visit, rather than requiring proof of residency in that county.
Focal Point Academy instructors bring DOJ, BSIS, NRA, and CCW training experience to the live-fire qualification portion, so you still get direct, practical instruction where it matters most, even though the classroom portion is online.
Course Description
The Non-Resident 16-Hour California CCW Initial Course is a 16-hour training program broken into multiple online sections, each with a quiz, plus a Final Exam covering all course content. Each lesson is timed to meet California’s 16-hour training requirement, and you have 90 days from purchase to complete the course.
The course covers:
- Firearm safety
- Firearm handling
- Shooting techniques
- Safe firearm storage
- Legal transportation
- Carry restrictions
- Permissible use of a firearm
- Lethal force in self-defense

California Penal Code Section 26165 establishes the required topics and minimum training time for initial CCW applicants.
