Does this course complete my initial BSIS Guard Card training requirement?

Yes. This course satisfies the required 8-hour initial Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force training requirement for the California BSIS Security Guard Registration application

Do I receive my Guard Card after class?

No. Completing the course does not automatically issue your Guard Card. After completing training, students must submit their application to BSIS, complete Live Scan fingerprinting, pay applicable fees, and wait for BSIS approval.

Is this the same as training for armed security?

No. This course is the required foundational training for an unarmed California Security Guard Registration. Armed security officers must also complete the separate BSIS Exposed Firearm Permit training and all required firearms qualifications.

Who should take this course?

Anyone interested in beginning a career in private security or obtaining security guard certification in San Diego can benefit from this course. Our BSIS Guard Card Training San Diego provides the required instruction needed to begin the California licensing process.

Do I need to complete both portions of this training with the same provider?

Yes. As of January 1, 2026, BSIS requires that both the 3-hour Power to Arrest and 5-hour Appropriate Use of Force portions of your initial 8-hour training be completed with the same BSIS-approved training provider. Training must also be completed within 6 months of submitting your BSIS Security Guard Registration application.

What does the BSIS exam involve?

The Power to Arrest portion includes an open-book exam that requires a score of 100%. If you don't pass on your first attempt, you're able to retake it in class until you do, so there's no need to worry going in.
