Passing the Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) Test: What Actually Trips People Up

To pass the Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) test in California, you need a score of at least 75%, or 23 out of 30 questions correct, on a test made up of true/false and multiple-choice questions covering firearm safety, storage, and handling. Most people who fail don’t fail because the material is hard, they fail because of a handful of predictable, avoidable mistakes.

What’s Actually on the FSC Test

The FSC test is administered by a DOJ-certified instructor and draws from the DOJ’s official FSC study guide. Questions cover basic firearm safety rules, safe storage requirements, California-specific firearm laws, and safe handling procedures. You must be 18 or older and present a valid California driver’s license or DMV ID to test.

The Mistakes That Trip People Up

  • Skipping the study guide entirely and assuming general firearm knowledge is enough. The test includes California-specific legal questions that aren’t intuitive.
  • Confusing state law questions with general safety knowledge, especially around storage and transport rules that are stricter in California than in many other states.
  • Rushing through true/false questions without reading the full statement, since these are written to test precise wording.
  • Not bringing a valid California driver’s license or DMV ID, which will prevent you from testing at all that day.

If You Don’t Pass

The $25 testing fee covers two attempts. If you don’t pass on your first try, there’s a mandatory 24-hour waiting period before you can retest. Most people who fail the first time pass comfortably on the second attempt after reviewing the study guide more closely.
