To work as a security guard in California you need a guard card, and the process is simpler than most people expect: complete an 8-hour BSIS training course, submit Live Scan fingerprints, and file your application with the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Most clean applications are approved within a few weeks, and the whole thing typically costs well under $400 including training.
Here is the full process for San Diego County applicants, step by step.
Step 1: Confirm You Are Eligible
You must be at least 18 years old and able to pass a criminal background check through the California DOJ and FBI. If you have prior arrests or convictions, disclose them fully on your application: incomplete disclosure is one of the most common reasons for delays and denials.
Step 2: Complete the 8-Hour Training
Before you can apply, California requires 8 hours of instruction in Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force from a BSIS-licensed training facility.
Focal Point Academy teaches the BSIS 8-Hour Guard Card Certification in person in Vista, serving Oceanside, Carlsbad, San Marcos, Escondido, and the rest of North San Diego County. The class is instructor-led, and we walk you through your state application after class so it gets filed right the first time.
Step 3: Submit Live Scan Fingerprints
BSIS requires fingerprints through a licensed Live Scan vendor using the guard-specific form, which carries the correct ORI code. You can download it from our Official Forms & Publications Library.
Expect the DOJ and FBI processing fees plus the vendor’s rolling fee, usually $70 to $90 total. Using the wrong form is the most common paperwork mistake, and it can cost you weeks.
Step 4: File Your BSIS Application
Apply online through the state licensing portal or by mail using the official application form. The BSIS application fee is $60 (it rose from $55 on October 1, 2025). Double-check that your name matches your ID exactly and that your Live Scan was submitted under the guard registration form, not a generic one.
Step 5: Verify Your Registration and Start Working
You can track your application and confirm your registration on the state’s license search. Once your registration is active, you are legally able to work for a licensed Private Patrol Operator. Many of our graduates are working within two to four weeks of taking the class, and we help connect graduates with local security employers.
After You Are Licensed: The Remaining Training Hours
The 8-hour course gets you registered, but California requires 40 total hours of training: 16 additional hours within 30 days of starting work and 16 more within the first 6 months. Your employer will typically coordinate these, but staying on schedule is your responsibility.
What It Costs, Start to Finish
- 8-hour training course: $207 with Focal Point Academy
- Live Scan fingerprinting: roughly $70 to $90
- BSIS application fee: $60
Most students complete the entire process for well under $400.
Planning to Work Armed Security?
The guard card is step one. If you want armed assignments, the next credential is the BSIS exposed firearm permit, which has its own training, assessment, and application process. We covered it in detail here: How to Get Your BSIS Exposed Firearm Permit, Step by Step.
